Brief Explanation from the Superintendent to Lincoln County SD Staff, Parents, Families, and Community Regarding Fall 2020 (more to come on this throughout the summer).

Dear LCSD Family and Friends,

This week I want to share with you a brief explanation regarding the way in which the school district will be providing education to our children this Fall 2020.

As you know, we have been in the grip of the COVID virus and all the fears that surround it since March. We have provided Supplemental Education which was review learning and then we provided Distance Learning For All, with an all-online education program, to one extent or another. And in the middle of all this twisting and turning, we provided, via pick up and bus drop off, more than 550,000 meals to our children. Currently, our summer meal program is running to provide food curbside. Our county is in Phase 1. Due to a huge outbreak, we will not be seeing a Phase 2 anytime soon (at least that’s what I think).

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) gave us 3 choices for education models for the Fall:

  1. All on-site (the site being schools).
  2. A hybrid meaning part on-site and part online. It allows you to have smaller numbers of students at school at a time which requires cohorts and very little mixing of groups.
  3. All online.

We have been provided a 50-page guidance document (that is quite useful) and we have to develop a plan that will need to be reviewed by our county health department, approved by the Board of Education (next Board meeting is July 21) and a final application for reopening to ODE by August 15. Teachers have now gone home for the summer and administration is supposed to be off the month of July. Students left Friday, June 5. And this work has to be done in collaboration with teachers, support staff, administrators, and include community input all in the next 2 weeks. We have great ideas already.

The LCSD has chosen the Hybrid Model: part of the week at school and part of the week online using technology for learning and, potentially, some paper and pencil education. As you might wonder, there are about one million details to how we pull this off with ALL of the MANY safety and health requirements given us in the 50-page guidance document. Safety is key.

I cannot present all of the details to you today. We have 8 teams of professionals working on this as we speak. This brief message is just to serve as a heads up about the general principle which is that we are planning for a part week on-campus/ part week off-campus hybrid model using many social distancing, cleanliness/sanitizing, and safety precautions so that our staff and our children are safe at school.  Please stay tuned for more information.
